Lady Darlington was interviewing a new cook.
+ 'What is your name, my good man ?' she asked him.
- 'Charles' he replied.
+ 'Charles what ?'
- 'Charles Dickens.'
+ 'Well, well, well! That's a famous name.'
- 'It's true, my Lady, I have quite a reputation for my sauces.'
The same Lady Darlington had a problem with one of her maids.
+ 'Anne,' she said one day. 'I have writen your name in the dust on the dining-room table.'
- 'I saw,' the maid said. 'And I wanted to tell your Ladyship that my name is spelt without an "e" on the end.'
