Robert Bruce, King of Scots was on the point of giving up. Concealed in a remote cave, without food or friends, his cause seemed hopeless.
Since his defeat by the English at Methven he had been a fugitive in own land. His spirits were now very low.
His eye was caught by a spider spinning its web. It was trying to swing across a gap. Again and again if failed. The King became curious. Would it give up ?
According to legend, on the seventh attempt the spider triumphed and changed the history of Scotland.
Its determination made a deep impression on the King. In may 1307 he defeated the English at the Battle of Loudon and won back his crown. He became one of Scotland's greatest rulers.
